31th
of Dec, Uncle didn’t go on the sea until the last few days before I go back to
UK.They spent 3days for some pile works in the good weather. He told me that it
is not good to farming in winter due to the temperature and wind and let me
come back in summer and make my film with sunshine and nice weather. They will
have many different fishes and jellyfishes.
Although
I didn’t go on sea this time, I learn a lot about fishing and problems that I
need to overcome. I will try to figure out the way to overcome these problems. How
to make the video stable and sound-recording is two major problems I need to
solve. I need more researches and videos to enrich my knowledge.

The Shooter
In my opinion, documentary
is the hardest kind of film as life is unrepeatable and the first reaction is
the most natural movement which could only be caught once. The director is the
brain and the shooter is hands. I think they are a whole as the same
recognition to what or who being framed. The accuracy and sensitivity of the
director should be completed by the shooter immediately. When making a film in the real life, verbal communication
is not enough to communicate after the shooter press the button. The tacit
understanding between the director and the shooter is the key to catch the most
valuable moment. An outstanding film shooter is also a director who completes
story boarding in their head immediately. So, in this project, I want to be the
shooter and make my own documentary.

Stability
It is undoubted that documentary is valuable
because of its reality. It is also a vehicle for the creator to express
themselves. However, the creator should respect and preserve the truth but not
making the truth that they believe. As a documentary maker, I should show the
story by only using the natural lighting and camera positions and angles.
Framing on the sea is hard to preserve the stability the film which should be
considered carefully. First of all, I need to keep myself stable then adjust
the camera with my sense and decision. When facing accidence, I should adjust
the camera with the most stable way. That requires a lot of practices.

Dec,After a week waiting, the day is still rainy. It seems not going to rain
today, but not a sunny day, so I phone my uncle and ask if he is going to the
sea. He said no, but he can bring me to the sea side to see how inshore fishing
is like also take some shots as practice. We set out after lunch to a bay which
is for small boat that only fishing inshore parking. They always set out in the
morning and return at noon. At first I want to step on the boat and try to take
some shots, but uncle said that it is impossible. Then when I really get on it I
can’t move naturally, not to mention framing.
I
wait for them coming back and take some shots of the surrounding. The small
boat didn’t catch a lot, some of them only got one. They show me how the small
sea eel looks like. It is my first time to see sea eel. I can’t imagine it is
that crystal clear while they are black when they grow up. On the road near the
bay, there are a small market that sells seafood that made by themselves. They
show me the good that them made and let me take photos with make me feel happy.

Sound-Recording
Sound-recording
is what I worry the most of my film. It’s hard for me to achieve what I want to
achieve through the technique I have now. Usually I use the in-built microphone
for sound-recording which is low quality. I also need to consider of
sound-recording while I am taking the shot. For example, when taking a shot I
need to listen carefully to what is the fisherman saying and adjust the camera
to match the sound; when I hear some special sound I need to find out where it
comes from with my camera. In other word, I need to shoot something that match
the sound I heard. Therefore, a separate sound-recording device will be good
which can overcome the bad sound-recording condition on the sea. However,
recording sound separately is not convenience for me as I can not complete
framing and sound-recording at the same time. While learning about
sound-recording, I may need to find a crew to complete this task.

of Dec,3 days later, my uncle comes back from the sea. I
run to his home and told him I want to make a documentary about fishermen. But
his answer broke my dream. He said fishing on the sea is extremely dangerous;
it is not as simple as I imagine. Waves on the sea are big and the boat is no
stable, lots of people lost their sea leg. He said his work is busy and have no
time to take care of me. At that moment, lots of image that could be taken come
up with my head, but how can I make the video stable when the condition is not
stable? He also mentioned about the condition on the ship, a small cabin for 4
men which is cloudy and smelly is not suitable me. He told me that in the past,
female is not allow to get on board because people in the past think it will
bring bad luck. But I think what he trying to say is that is possible for
female on board now. I need to find a way to get on the boat. Finally, we had a
solution, which is go fishing with them offshore. That will be complete in one
day so that there are no accommodation problems.

village in my memory. I used to go there and play with my cousin but seldom to
meet my uncle. Every time I saw him he will bring us to the sea side and swim
there. Unfortunately he is not home today too, but in the village. People keep
asking who am I on the way my aunt bringing me home. It is a strong feeling to
me that everyone in the village is treating each other as their family; the
whole village is like a big family. There is no stranger in the village. When I
get into the house, my granny is sewing fishing net. She shout my name and let
me sit next to her. She was sewing fishing net skillfully and talking with me,
sometimes she told with her neighbor. After I told her I want to make a

kind of fishing net with small mesh which is made by machine and used for
catching small fishes in winter.

7th of
Dec, December seaside in China is cold and wet. People were wearing winter
clothes and I could easily recognize who is the fisherman because my uncle told
me that they will not been checked by customs and their dark skin. In the countryside,
every man in the family is a fisherman. They use different nets for different
kind of fish and different seasons. In winter, the net was made by cloth and
nearly no mesh because the fishes are small at that time. When catching sea
eel, the fishermen need to do some piling works in the chosen area. Then put
the net into the eel cabin where connected with the pile by the net. The net
was floating in the sea and moving with the current. The sea eel will follow
the current and get into the net. Griping the net when the tide fall and
release the sea eel. And wait for the next pile and fish again.

Long Lens
Usually,
documentary film is using long lens. Everything is happening in front of you
and you will not know when it ends, that’s why we need long lens and keep shooting.
However, using long lens effectively does not mean following everything like a
fly. A dedicated shooter should know how to choose the right thing to shoot and
adjusting position, composition and view depends on motion, emotion and how
thing change. Knowing the person’s feeling helps the shooter to get a better
shot. The long shots in documentary always shock the audience through the
actual time it toke which could not be achieved by final cutting. Sometimes it
is necessary to abandon shooting technique to make a complete long shot. For
example how to use auto-focusing instead of manual-focusing to avoid defocus. For
my project, shots usually taken on the sea, many shots will be unstable and I
need to practice more about that.

Board Way
I took part in the
interview studying and framing activity in Board Way. It is meanly about how to
choose the right angle, height, background, sound-recording and view when we
making a video. For me, I chose mid-shot which I think it easier to catch the
motions and emotions of the interviewer and interviewee. For the angle, I chose
3/4 face and camera facing the interviewee to avoid them glance right and left.
For the height, I chose eye level. For the back ground I prefer somewhere about
the theme. It is the first time I engaged sound-recording which I am looking
forward to learn. A clear sound-recording helps the documentary to preserve the
reality. So, it is the most important thing that I need to learn.
Except for gaining
knowledge, team-work is another thing I feel thankful and important. I don’t
have many opportunities to work with others, but I think in the future I need
team-work to finish my project.

'why and how as a director do'
In
the past, the film I made is story film with specific environment, light and
persons. While making a documentary film, the maker should be sensitive to
catch the specific moment that sends the right message. As it is framing the
real life, everything will happen only once, I need to be sharp of everything;
have the sense of life to find out what will be easily ignored by other people
and catch it with me camera. A documentary maker also needs to feel life with
their heart and to find out the truth of life. That what I need to do as well,
taking part in my life and feeling the environment and people with my heart.
Then all my emotion will be expressed through my camera. Many shots will be
taken by my sense. I think a video shooter should think about 'why and how as a
director do'.

John Grierson
1.Do
not summarize your topic. You can write an essay about postal service, but you
must make a film about a letter.
2.Do
not obey 3 basic principles: sociological, poetical, technical.
3.Do
not ignore the script. Do not make a film with your luck. Once the script is
done, your film is done. So, if you are making your film now you can start
preparing the next one.
4.
Do not think story can be told by only narrating, it should be told by vision
and sound. Unnecessary narrating makes people uncomfortable.
5.
Bear in mind that every single shot you toke is a part of your film. A shot in
a wrong place can be bad, even the most beautiful shot
6.
Do not create unnecessary
shooting angle. An unsuitable angle will only ruin the atmosphere.
7.
Do not use too many fast-paced cutting skills. The faster they are the more
likely to be the most beautiful adagio.
8.
Do not over use music. If you do so, the audience will refuse to listen to it.
9.
Do not over use live sound. It is better to use it suggestively or
complementally.
10.
Do not use too many light effects, or make it too complicated. Dissolve, fate
in and fate out is the punctuation of you film, they are your comma and period.
11.
Do not use too many close-up shots. Save it until the climax. In a
balance-structured film, close-up shots appear naturally. If they are too many,
it will smothery and lost its importance.
12.
When dealing with people, don’t hesitate. Human and animal are all beautiful.
13.
You should tell the story clearly. A real subject must be told simply and
clearly, but it doesn’t means to theatricalize it.
14.
Do not abandon the chance of experiment, the name of documentary all come from
experiment. Without experiment, documentary has no value even not exist.
These
14 tenets from John Grierson are the tenets for me to look at documentary, and
also help me to develop my own works.

Documentary
After
some case studies about documentary, I found that almost every documentary I
watched have narrating. That let me think about how important a narrating is to
documentary. It based on the image and written as the story goes. Narrating
complete, or even improve, the image, but not repeating it. Generally speaking,
I think narrating should be designed as the story goes rather than only simply
talking about the image. Although it plays an important role in documentary, it
is only a vehicle to make it easier for the audience to understand the idea.
Meanwhile, I found that possible to make a good documentary without narrating
through framing skills, sound-recording skills and final editing. Sometimes it narrows
the gap between the creator and audience. I prefer to make a documentary
without narrating.

Traverlling Birds
This video had spent
Jacues Perrin and his crew 4 years, 460 kilo-meters of film and over 40
million dollars across over 50 countries and regions. 600 people involved, including
17 greatest pilots in the world and 2 scientific expeditions. A large amount of
shots taken in different places, such as south pole, deserts, valleys and sky,
make the nature admirable. During the first year of the project, they didn’t
frame a lot, instead, they followed the migrant birds and off their guard. They
didn’t start framing until the second year, they use special tools such as
small planes, dynamical umbrellas and flying objects in the similar size as
birds with a special hidden camera to frame the birds. Meanwhile, they fed some
wild birds as actors to frame with the aircraft carrier and factories. All this
serious preparations they have done made the video admirable and great.
The video was framing
in many amazing angles which make the audience feel like they are really there,
flying with the birds, so do I. There are a few words in the video, instead of
it they use lots of live recorded sound and songs singed by choir. The whole video
is the explanation of the first sentence of the video ‘The migration of birds
is all about a promise’ which stay in the audience mind for a very long time. You
will find that the earth have been changed a lot by human being by following
the birds fly all over the world in 30 minutes. In that 30 minutes, the birds
are the king of the world whole their living environment is now seriously
damaged. The music playing when the bird was hit and the parrot successfully
escaped really shocked me. The music mixed with sounds of birds flying and
chirping in New Age way created the whole atmosphere of the whole video.

Sierra Leone--The Toughest Place To Be A Fisherman Part 2/2
Documentary of how catching a fish in Sierra Leone by local fishing is a matter of life and death. PART 2/2
This documentary is framing an area the fish for living. In the film, we can see the traditional fishing techniques, live style, food sources, cooking and boat building in Sierra Leone. It meanly shows the experience as a reporter communicating and interacting with the local people and talk about his feeling afterward. Surely, It is not a documentary that only framing on the sea, but the in whole live environment of the fishermen between sea and land including their habits and activities. The whole documentary looks natural which means the creator have researched deeply into both the local people and their life. Because of the friendship between the local people and the creator, they are acting naturally in front of the camera which allow the creator to catch the reality and touching moment. Obviously, this film requires lots of research before taking a shot.

Mere Samandar Mere Kinary - Documentary
Rehri Goth is a centuries old fishing village along the Sindh coastline. Industrial discharge, oil spill and solid waste from neighboring cattle colonies is destroying the aquatic life. The documentary explores the economic plight of the fishermen, the safety and health concerns, and possible solutions.
This video is more likely to be a comprehensive documentary. It is meanly talking about a village that fish for living and suffered from the oil spill. Lots of people get sick, but they did not aware how important their health is. The shot of a fisherman sewing the fishing net is my favor shot as it looks real and simple. Also the shot of the sick child which arise my sympathy and willing to help them. This is a very good documentary and, at the same time, a very good advertisement to seek help from the government and the rest of the world.

Wild Caught (swordfish documentary 2012)
Cognitive Dissonant Studios takes you on a journey aboard sword fishing vessel Jaxon T where Captain Hoang Gia Anh demonstrates how some of the largest commercially caught fish in the world are boarded and then brought to auction for top dollar. This is a rare glimpse into the lives and perspectives of the fisherman who make the Honolulu Fish Auction possible.
At the very beginning of the video, it shown the image of the fish market and shots of fish transferring and selling. Then comes the lead and frames he chat with the director before they start taking shots on the sea. Light is wonderful when taking a shot outdoor, but that in the cabin was that good. Personally, I do not think this documentary could complete their filming in one simple day. That is why some of the frames have a large difference in light. There are also lots of frames taken under water in this documentary. It shown the way how a fisherman dress, eat and work; also shown different kinds of fishes and place they store fishes in different ways. Fish-eye lens and wide-angle lens is widely used in this video, which made the film good. I think I need support from the University of Lens.

Amazing Cutting Fish in Japan - CANON EOS 5D Mark II Short Film
Cutting Yellow fin Tuna Fish in Japan. His technique is wonderful. Fast, clean and beautiful. Speed produces a good taste of "Sashimi", "Sushi".
This video is showing the process of how japanese killing fish with lots of close-up shots. It is a good combination of clearness and colour which makes the audience feel comfortable. There are no dialogues in the whole video, instead, the creator use rhythm of the background music and the live recording sound to control the speed. It use a traditional Japanese music as the background music which I like the feeling and inspire me to use Chinese traditional music as the background music in my film to create a better atmosphere.
Sound has a great ability of creating atmosphere; different kind sounds create different moods and imaginations. When combining vision and sound, vision gives sound a image and sound give vision a feeling and imagination. As Thomas Skinner said, the relationship between vision and sound should be ‘1+1=3’, in another word, when combining vision and sound, it create a new sense which brings the audience psychological imagination. BBC News Cornwall RNLI crew spots fisherman in rough seas mp4
What I learned from this video is that taking a shot on the sea very unstable. Sea wave and wind have reduced the stability of the film. The instability of light on the sea is another problem, which make frames grey, fuzzy and hard to focus. Also, sound recording is big challenge for me. How to mix sound and frames is the key to improve the reality of documentary. For me, I do not have much experience of sound recording. So it is necessary to put it into my learning plan.

Salty Dogs - A Day in the Life of Lobster Fisherman
From morning till night some weathered salty sea men fish to classic rock. A day in the life of Winthrop lobster fisherman. Beautifully photographed, without dialogue.
‘Documentary is telling the story through visual language but not narrating. Documentary is a method that editing frames and original sounds with filming sense to show the mean idea without words.’(http://www.starlunwen.net/jiaoyujiaoxue/129217.html)
This video is my favor one as its angle of framing is different from other documentary. It is framing in from a unique angle with clearness and wonderful colour. Usually, documentary about fishermen has a few shots at night, but this one is different. It used night framing skill and lighting skill to show lots of shots at night. Shots that taken in daytime are also great as it used different framing skill. This video is a non-narrating documentary, but is not unreal and boring as it has sounds from the ship engine and radio. I am eager to learn this kind of framing skill and music editing technique. It a very good example for me to learn.

The Practice of close-up shot
Personally,
close-up shot has a special power. Usually, documentary will keep a distance
from the people or object politely. People’s eye will not be limited by that
distance. They can see through the darkness and distance by their soul. So,
camera should also be sharp enough to see through the life through close-up
shot. Shots taken by standard lens and long lens will create a different
feeling for the audience. Shots taken by standard lens give the audience pressures
as they are looking closely which make the film first-person perspective. If
the audience does not agree with what being framed, then they may feel uncomfortable.
For
close-up shots taken by long lens, it gives a feeling of you are watch in a
distance which makes you feel uninvolved and outside of the issue. The audience
feels like exploring life with zooming of long lens. Using long lens for
close-up shots not only improving the accuracy and concentration of the film
but also show the shooter is paying attention from a distance.

Scallop Fishing Documentary
Part 1 of follow Brian in Mevagissey Cornwall as he sets out to catch Scallops, learn how the equipment on the boat works. (Turn volume + vid quality to 480p as sound had to be edited quieter due to engine noise and having no external microphone)
Part 2 of the documentary featuring Brian the Cornish Scallop Fisherman - See what the dredges bring up and landing the catch.
It is a documentary of how a fresher fisherman learned to use the equipment on the ship. Lots of unstable shots which should be avoided according to my experience. However, the fidelity of sound recording is quite good. There are shots of fishermen singing with a happy mood, which also brings a happy mood to the audience. So I think I can record laugh of fishermen and edit it into the film to make it more enjoyable. This video also could be my learning resource, if I take my tutor’s idea. It is a good opportunity of learning.
