Broadway ---- ‘Light Practice 1’

Key Light
This is the main light on the subject and will generally be the brightest light in the scene. Together with a fill and backlight, this will make up the basics of three-point lighting. The key light is generally placed in front of the subject and off to the side. You can vary the appearance of the key by making it a spotlight, which will create a hard key with definitive shadows, or flooding it for a soft key with less shadows.

Fill Light
The fill light is used to fill in the dark spots that the key light creates. It is placed on the opposite side of the subject as the key light and is generally a less intense light. Also, the fill should be more of a flood light for a softer light than the key.

Backlight
This light is placed in back of the subject to light it from the rear. This will provide a light ring on the edges of the subject, which will separate it from the background and add more dimensions to the framing.

Background Light
A background light can be used to light the background of the subject. It is generally placed behind the subject and aimed towards the background of the scene. This type of lighting can be useful in illuminating the background of a dark scene for added depth.

Practical Lights
Practical lights are lights that can be seen within the scene. Examples include lamps and other lighting decorations that will be in the shot. These lights can double as decorations as well as sources for the light in your scene. Practical lights will also inform the direction of the lighting of your scene.

Underwater Cinematography (can't practice)

Filming underwater is a specialty unto itself, and being a very safe, capable, and confident diver is the number one prerequisite towards being an underwater cameraperson. I think if I want becoming an underwater cameraperson dive regularly, upgrade my diver certification, and enroll in a commercial diving course to become familiar with current practices and equipment. (I know it’s for me is very difficult, because I never dive.)

Underwater photography presents the cinematographer with a wide variety of situations. I need become an experienced diver and really understand the mechanics and optics of your underwater camera, I will be able to deal with most underwater filming assignments. Water is a dense medium and it has certain light absorption properties that cannot be changed. It is crucial to understand how to work with and around these factors. Working in open water with sea conditions, weather, current and visibility changing daily or sometimes hourly, I have to be prepared for just about anything. Locations might vary from a tropical reef to a frozen ice pack, from a backyard pool to a cement tank 200 in diameter and 60 deep, and water visibility could vary from 100 to less than a few feet.

My buoyancy control is a very important consideration when shooting underwater. At certain times I will want to be neutral so I can swim the camera like a Steadicam and crane combined, or I might be stationed on a set of parallels in a tank, without my fins on, heavily weighted for stability.

Underwater Cinematography

From islands in the Pacific to the coastline of Alaska; and from the Magellan Straits to the Red Sea, giant screen audiences have toured the world's oceans through the lens of MacGillivray Freeman Films. At least one-third of their nearly two-dozen large-format films contain sequences on or in the ocean.
For Dolphins and their other underwater film projects, MacGillivray Freeman mounted the large-format camera on boat bows, sterns and masts. Film teams also mount cameras on the front of "scooters," torpedo-shaped vehicles steered by a camera operator. The scooters, which travel about three miles per hour, are narrow, so the camera can move through tighter spaces and get closer to the surface of reefs, giving audiences the feeling that they're "soaring" through the water environment. Most of the underwater camera movement in any one film, however, is accomplished by the cinematographer himself. And to the cinematographer and his crew, the large-format camera is affectionately named, "the pig."
Large-format cameras weigh 100 pounds. Filming underwater adds another 150 pounds for the camera's waterproof housing. True, filming underwater lightens the load, but the sheer bulk of the camera makes it very difficult to maneuver. Size generates momentum and currents and waves buffet the camera, making it harder to control than smaller cameras.
The film magazines, which each weigh 10 pounds, contain only three minutes of film. Greg MacGillivray, the Producer/Director ofDolphins, chose to film several of the underwater sequences in slow motion to capture the beauty of dolphin physiology and movement. This actually speeds up the film going through the camera. Instead of 24 frames per second, the film charges through the camera at 48 frames per second. A three-minute film magazine now yields just 90 seconds of action.
Those logistical nightmares are present no matter where a large-format cinematographer is shooting. Dolphins complicate everything. MacGillivray Freeman cinematographer and technology director Brad Ohlund says, "Dolphins are fast-moving, elusive animals. Filming them means you're in a situation that requires rapid deployment of the camera." Normally, large-format cinematographers use winches to get the 250-pound camera in and out of the water, but a winch is too slow for dolphin photography, so the film team built ramps on the boats to push the camera into the water.
One of the most memorable moments for cinematographer Bob Talbot was not when he photographed a beautifully poised dolphin in dramatic lighting; it was when the camera and housing slid down the boat transom, into the water, narrowly missing the waiting cinematographer's head! "I could only think...wow, wouldn't that have been a classic way for me to go," he later joked (much later).
Another challenge for the underwater film team in the Bahamas was to be in clear water with cloudless skies so there would be enough light for the scene. "We were jumping in holes between clouds," described Talbot. Fortunately, most of the cinematography for the film occurred within 30 feet of the ocean's surface. Because natural lighting extends to those depths, artificial lighting was not necessary. Dolphins would be virtually impossible to track with light beams anyway, as their movement through the water is quick and unpredictable.
Off the coast of Argentina, another experienced underwater cinematographer, Paul Atkins and his sound recordist, producer and wife Grace Atkins, declared a new-found respect for the large-format underwater camera: Miss Piggy. "Filming in the large-format is dramatically different than 16mm or 35mm," shared Grace. "The bulkiness of the format requires more than twice the cases and equipment than the smaller film formats. When you're traveling to remote locations and filming underwater, the details of the shoot become mind-numbing."
After searching twelve hours each day for wild dolphins, and battling "Miss Piggy" in 90-second increments, the crew then spends four or more hours each evening cleaning the salt and sand off of all of the equipment to prepare for the next day. Film teams followed this routine for four weeks at each location in the film. They'll all say it's worthwhile. Each underwater cinematographer knows that their exquisitely beautiful images will appear on the biggest screens in the world, immersing audiences in an environment that these cinematographers love, want to share, and have dedicated their lives to help preserve.

Summary of basic technique

After this two-week study, I got some achievements in the area of technology.

The shooting on the sea includes daily life of fish man, scene, and emergencies, which shows the situation of fishery productions and the life style of fish man. Thus it is significant to choose the shooting content. It is special shooting on the sea, so certain basic skill is necessary.

Firstly, stability of camera during shoot is important. Instead of using one hand, the best way of keeping stable is holding the camera with pair of hands. Of course, using stuffs around to keep stable is also a good choice. On the sea, the boat always shakes with the waves. In order to ensure that the camera and the subject are relatively static, it is good to avoid leaning on the boat. All these ways is aim to try to reduce screen jitter.

Secondly, when you cannot take the entire scene in the screen, you can move the camera from right to left or left to right, but keeping your body stable is important, especially keeping your hand stable. The correct approach is keep the lower body stay and move the upper body, taking the waist a dividing point, and sweeps the camera from A point to B point. To be more precise, firstly, face the B-oriented point and of keep the lower body set, then rotate the upper body for the A point Thus the camera is direct to point A, press the video button and recorded 5 seconds, then slowly sweep the camera back to the B point.

Last but not least, the speed of movement must match the range of shooting area and the number of shooting scene. If the scene is static, you can faster shooting speed, but you still need to ensure the clear of the image. If you are shooting dynamic object or there are many objects, you can slow down the sweeping speed. In my opinion, I want to reduce movement of the camera during shooting on the boat, or slow down the moving speed as possible to en sure the stability.

In order to record the details of fish man’s life and the scene on the sea, I will keep working and doing more research.

Life of Pi

Plot Summary forLife of Pi(2012)

Based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel, is a magical adventure story centering on Pi Patel, the precocious son of a zoo keeper. Dwellers in Pondicherry, India, the family decides to move to Canada, hitching a ride on a huge freighter. After a shipwreck, Pi finds himself adrift in the Pacific Ocean on a 26-foot lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, all fighting for survival.

According to reports, most of the sea drift scene shot in an old airport in Taiwan. The crew in this place to build a large pool, all sea scenes in the film where the film was shooting finished here. Film props designer David Gropman said: Our large pool length of 60 meters, 30 meters wide and 2.7 meters deep, we were able to create 50 different types of waves.

The Tigers was produced by Bill Weston. He is ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the witch, and the wardrobe’ CG biological visual effect director. He said: We collected more than 100 hours of tiger video material obsercation and copy their manner and behavior. But in the film still 24 shots with four real tiger shooting.

In the ‘life of Pi’ production of TV, Ang Lee talked about the understanding of the film: To make the film he know themselves, understand the world and the process of the relationship between people. In my memory, the same meaning is also expressed in his ‘ten years to sleep the film Dream’ book. His every film is directly to one's heart's desire.

Ang Lee said: shoot this film is an impossible task, but his own hard work four years after all done. The first time I felt the 3D is an integral part of a movie, as well as the proportion of frame transformation layers alternating clips, everything is in order to the story itself. Story from adventure to become some fantasy, Pi actually do not have a lot of inner expression lens, but I can feel it.
